In this video an English Language Learner works through a shape puzzle. Although he hits a roadblock early on and lacks the mathematical language to express the specific shapes he needs, he articulates his ideas through gesture and is able to solve the problem.

Focus on the Child videos are taken from one-on-one interviews with individual children. The interviews are designed to elicit evidence of children’s mathematical thinking. They are not teaching episodes or formal assessments.
