Pattern with Child 14
This second grader extends a repeating shape pattern to ordinal numbers.
Focus on the Child videos are taken from one-on-one interviews with individual children. The interviews are designed to elicit evidence of children’s mathematical thinking. They are not teaching episodes or formal assessments.

Why is this important?
This second grader recognizes the repeating shapes but does not make use of the quantitative structure of the pattern. CCSS Standard for Mathematical Practice #7 asks children to look for and make use of structure.
