Learning the Counting Words with Child 16
A preschooler counts as high as she can. As a dual language learner, she is learning the count word sequence in English.
Focus on the Child videos are taken from one-on-one interviews with individual children. The interviews are designed to elicit evidence of children’s mathematical thinking. They are not teaching episodes or formal assessments.
Why is this important?
The stable order principle of counting highlights the importance of learning the sequence of counting words. Children learn the stable order of number names through practice with oral counting, singing counting songs and finger plays, and listening to counting books.
