Counting is the first and most basic problem-solving strategy in math. As adults, we count fluently and easily but children have to make huge cognitive leaps as they learn to count. Counting is a method for quantifying groups larger than the small sets we can subitize. It’s a process that involves skills — actions we take — and concepts — mathematical ideas we have to understand.
